Medisport Convergence Centre
A unique location bringing together technologies for sport and medical applications.
The Convergence Centre exploits the strong natural linkages between health and fitness by offering co-development opportunities for medical devices and sports equipment.
Sporting expertise and resources combine with medical and other enabling technology companies on a site which is at the heart of Scotland's major medical research centres.
Sport and Medical Devices are two areas where tecnologies converge, that is to say that products and services are derived from the combination of quite separate disciplines and sectors. These may include, but are not limited to, textiles, electronics, sensors, orthopaedics, wireless communications, engineering, materials, automotive and a host of others.
The linkages between sport and health, or physical activity and well being, are well established throughout the world. Scotland is no exception giving a key role for sport in the Scottish Executive strategies for health, education and social inclusion (Sport 21 2003-2007: The National Strategy for Sport). By applying similar technologies to creating the products, there is now a substantial overlap between sports equipment and medical devices which are often separated only by manufacturing and approval.
By superimposing this convergence on a more conventional cluster strategy, we have created an infrastructure for enhanced collaboration and innovation. The further convergence of these two similar sectors on a single site will provide a unique opportunity for technology companies to develop products for both markets.
