Welcome to Sporting Chance Initiative

Scotland's Hub for Business Innovation in Sport

The Sporting Chance Initiative (SCI) helps Scottish businesses with fewer than 250 employees to develop new and enhance existing products and services for sports, physical activity and active leisure markets.

SCI provides business support at whatever stage in your business journey you may find yourself. Whether you have an established product or if your idea is just scribbled on the back of envelope, we may be able to help you get to where you want to be.
Over the last 3 years SCI has helped more than 500 small businesses and innovators to develop new products and services for sports markets, which include growth areas in fitness, leisure, adventure tourism and health/wellness.
The programme has supported innovators to improve sports equipment, develop new fitness aids, test new services, validate benefits, develop nutritional products, create digital apps and apply leading edge textiles and clothing design ideas to a range of sports. Our clients have ranged in size from sole traders at the start of their innovation journey, to SMEs with around 100 employees seeking to develop new ideas to help them grow.

"Sporting Chance Initiative provided Diary Doll with a bespoke market research report which allowed us to expand our potential customer base. Taking advantage of SCI's resources has really improved our position in the market place and aided the company's applications for financial support.

The work SCI do is fantastic for small businesses. It is really encouraging, as a business, to know that an organisation like SCI is available for support.

Carol Smillie(Diary Doll)

"Without the support of Keith Elrick and the SCI team this would not have been possible and I'd like to thank all involved for helping Tweetsport grow and find its voice."

Eilidh Donaldson(Founder, Tweetsport)

"Thanks so much...this info is gold!!"

Steven Kirk(Bouncefootball)

"Thanks again- I'm over the moon to be in this position so quickly & it's all down to you."

Katie Goodwin(Hotbott)

"The Sporting Chance team made this really easy for us: they were able to find suitable coaches and make the necessary introductions."

Kate Ho(Managing Director, Interface3)

"We are delighted to be working with Transition Extreme to explore this exciting area of education and hope that this is the beginning of a long term research collaboration."

Dr Donald Gray(University of Aberdeen)

"The support of Sporting Chance was excellent, allowing our collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University."

Andrew Mulford(CEO and Founder, Lifesapps)

"The students have gained practical experience in the application of marketing theory to a real business."

Dr Jason Turner(Lecturer in Marketing, University of Abertay)

"We are very excited about the project and are looking forward to working with the Digital Design Studio to develop this new product."

Brian Nicholson(Managing Director, reflexblue)

"Without this support and your continued help, this opportunity would be at least two to three years down the line."

Sid Ball(Managing Director, Border Bows)

"We are delighted to be playing a key role in this research. The health and fitness of school children has never been more important."

Professor Julien Baker(University of the West of Scotland)

"It was very helpful to have access to world class expertise and equipment.  We had developed a prototype and were able to refine this."
